America, As Told By Childish Gambino

So, I’m not going to lie, son. Real talk, I have no interest in writing some elaborate think piece, man. I mean, at this point, A TON has already been said about Donald Glover‘s, excuse me, Childish Gambino‘s “This Is America” video. Frankly, there’s no way for me to add any new insight to the zeitgeist, fam. Side note, Blavity has my favorite write-up about the video so far. Feel free to check it out, folks. In any case, instead of trying to break new ground, I’d much rather speak on what resonates with me. All in all, there are a lot of gems in this joint. Allow me to speak about my favorites, bruh.

Ok, the first thing that jumps out at me is the dancing. Now, the actual moves that Gambino and the children are doing aren’t important, son. In actuality, they’re just a distraction from all of the fuckery going on in the background. On the real, it’s a perfect metaphor for this current generation, man. Look, these days, people only seem to be concerned with turning up, doing drugs and getting money. All the while, racism and classism have engulfed so much around us. All I know is, either we’re not paying attention or we’re just looking for an escape, fam.

Now, the next thing that jumps out at me is the gun violence. Namely, the fact that guns are treated better than people. Shit, after Gambino shoots a guitar player in the head, the gun is safely placed in a cloth. Meanwhile, the dead body is callously hauled away. Next, Gambino murders an entire church choir, but the AK-47 is delicately placed in another cloth. All I can say is, we all live in a country where the Second Amendment is more important than our lives. Keeping it a buck, I low key gave up on the idea of gun reform after Sandy Hook. Listen, if twenty dead children doesn’t inspire action, then what the fuck will, bruh? *Sigh* We can’t continue on like this, son.

Lastly, on a more positive note, I’m presently surprised by the vocals of Young Thug, 21 Savage, Slim Jxmmi, Quavo and BlocBoy JB. Being honest, I didn’t hear them at first, man. I guess I was too enthralled by what I was watching. Anyway, after hearing their adlibs, I’m excited by the fact they contributed to a song like this. Look, it can be said that artists like them have a heavy hand in the issues outlined in the second paragraph. But, they allow themselves to be part of a bigger cause. Now, I don’t know what that means going forward, but it’s super dope in the moment, fam.

In the end, well done, Childish Gambino! Ultimately, I dig the fact that he’s using his platform in such a manner. By and by, it’s easier to be “safe,” bruh. It’s easier to do what’s comfortable for the masses. At the end of the day, it’s much harder to jump off of the ledge, unsure of where the chips may fall. So, shout-out to Glover for not being safe. The way I see it, the times are waaaay too dangerous for that. Good day. LC out.

P.S. Since this post is about Glover, I also want to quickly discuss something else. Look, can Black people kill the narrative that a person can’t be pro-Black and date outside of the race? Listen, who gives a fuck if Glover’s significant other isn’t Black? Oh, is he suddenly clueless about minority issues because he fell in love with someone? Is he suddenly blind to systemic racism because he has a connection with someone? Knock it the fuck off, people! Everyone should be free to love who they love AND work towards community empowerment. That is all.

What The F*ck Did Ja Rule Do?!

So, am I wrong for laughing at this Fyre Festival situation? Son, this is Joanne The Scammer on a million! What the fuck were Ja Rule and Billy McFarland thinking, man?! First off, the idea of a “luxury music festival” is preposterous. Has anyone actually been to a real music festival? Shit, “organized chaos” is the best way to describe it, son. In any case, this proposition was clearly doomed from the start. However; no one could’ve guessed this idea would turn into this much of a shit-show, fam. Anyway, let’s just take a moment to make fun of everyone involved.

To begin, who in their right mind would pay five or six figures for a music festival? I mean, will God come down from Heaven and play a mean guitar solo? Will Buddha rise from the dead and offer everyone the finest of hallucinogens? Will Noah construct villas for everyone from the same material he used to make The Ark? Bruh, how could these dummies not see the scam in action? Look, Bella Hadid was never coming to the shindig, son. Anyone who believed otherwise is a plum fool, man.

Now, with all of that being said, Ja Rule and McFarland are still foul, fam. They literally tried to finesse all of their patrons with disaster relief tents, yellow school buses and cheese sandwiches. Listen, they essentially created an overpriced refugee camp. I mean, we could basically call it “Fyre Festival sponsored by FEMA.” Man, it’s no wonder they’re being sued for $100 million right now. Shit, if I was the plaintiff, an ass whooping would be part of my settlement, son. I should be allowed to punch Ja Rule and McFarland in their respective mouths, man. I guarantee that would ensure they wouldn’t try this fuck shit again, bruh.

Ultimately, I don’t feel sorry for anyone here. This shit is just funny, man. Next time, how about everyone just stick to the well-known music festivals? That way, everyone is aware of what they’re really getting ahead of time. LC out.

So… Nicki Minaj Finally Responded To Remy Ma…

Welp, the beef between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj got wack very quickly, didn’t it? Look, it started off with a bang when “ShEther” came out. However; every subsequent event after the release of that song has been trash. I mean, Nicki was galavanting all over the world like she wasn’t thinking about this, while Remy put out the uber-basura “Another One.” In addition, Remy hit the interview circuit, talking to anyone who would listen about her gripes with Nicki. *Sigh* I was hoping for more, son. I was hoping for a helluva lot more, man. With all of that being said, Nicki’s response on the newly-released “No Frauds” can’t save this feud, bruh. It’s already dead.

So, in the middle of the night, Nicki decided to drop a trio of records. She put out the aforementioned “No Frauds” with Drake and Lil Wayne, “Changed It” with another Wayne feature, and “Regret In Your Tears,” a Meek Mill takedown. All in all, I guess these songs make sense since pictures of the recently-reunited trio started circulating around social media. I mean, it’s all cool in theory, but none of these records move me, man. Now, in regards to Nicki’s replies on “No Frauds,” they were good enough to beat “Another One,” but definitely not “ShEther.”

Moving on, after listening to that record a few times, it’s evident that Nicki is responding directly to “Another One.” This further proves the point that Remy’s second diss track was a terrible idea. If she just left it at “ShEther,” I doubt Nicki would’ve ever responded. Remy let her back in the game with that corny ass follow-up record. Shiiiit, everyone on her team should be fired for letting her release that garbage. In any case, Nicki made a couple of references to record sales and plastic surgery, but nothing hit hard for me.

Ultimately, this battle was not what I envisioned, son. I won’t lie, man, I’m disappointed in both Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj. On the real, both of these women can actually rap, bruh. I just wished they brought bigger guns to the shootout. This whole shit ended up being a waste, man. *Sigh* LC out.

P.S. Did Nicki really drop a diss song with features on it? Did Nicki really drop a diss song where the hook is a “No Type” ripoff? Man, this shit is an obvious ploy for radio play. When she enlists Drake and Wayne, she doesn’t even have to have a good song. The record will sell based on the names only. Look, either battle for real or don’t, Nicki. I can’t stand the tomfoolery, son. That is all.

P.P.S. Nicki’s Instagram rant was harder than the damn music. Man, what part of the game is this? She must’ve learned about “Twitter fingers” from Meek. Good Lord, this is fucking corny, son! For the last time, numbers don’t fucking matter! KRS-One was a nobody when he took down MC Shan. 50 Cent was underground when he destroyed Ja Rule. The game is soooo fucked up, man. *Sigh* No mas.

A Message To Rappers With ‘Lil’ In Their Names

Look, no matter how objective I am in this post, I know some people out there will call me a hater. Sadly, that’s how shit works in our current world. Any time someone has an opinion about something, they’re automatically labeled a hater. With that being said, fuck all of that because I have something to get off of my chest. So, I’m dedicating this post to some of these new rapper with “Lil” in their names.

Now, while I’ve already mentioned this on my blog before, I’ll freely admit I’m a 30-year-old Black dude. Actually, I’m lying, son. I just had a birthday a couple of week ago, so I’m 31 now. In any case, I still consume Rap music at a furious pace. Judging from my socially conscious and political material, it would be safe to assume I’m a big fan of artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. However; I’d be remiss if I didn’t speak about the virtues of Rae Sremmurd‘s sermons and also mention the fact I’m the treasurer of the FutureHive. I say all of that to say I have no beef with the current state of music. Well, I have SOME beef, but we can speak about that another time. In actuality, the main problem I have with some of these younger dudes is their plain lack of respect for the artists and producers who came before them. If anyone let them tell it, they’d probably insinuate that they’ve reached stardom completely independent of their predecessors.

To keep it all of the way trill, in this particular post, I’m specifically speaking about Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty. While I’d never tell their fans to dismiss their music, I have a major gripe with the way they’ve responded to their musical elders. First, let me start with Lil Uzi. In an interview with Ebro In The Morning on Hot 97, my mind was blown when I saw Vert’s reaction to Ebro asking him to rhyme over a DJ Premier beat. Ok, I get it, this instrumental probably came out when he was a baby, but the look of disdain and confusion on his face was thoroughly baffling to me. Architects like Preemo were vital to the growth of Rap music, not only musically but also business wise. There was a time when ALL of the biggest rappers HAD to have a Premier beat in order for their album to be official. It’s perfectly ok for the sonic quality of an art form to evolve, but how dare this kid judge a legend of Preemo’s caliber! Ultimately, Uzi WISHES his legacy will last as long as his. Someone tell that dude to holla back in five years and see if he’s even still popping. By then, he’ll probably already be the “old shit” he’s looking down on now.

Next, let’s talk about Lil Yachty. In an interview with Real 92.3, Yachty went on a tangent about the irrelevance of having a “cold 16” and telling “old people” to get over the fact the music has changed. He went even further to let us know that no one was doing “spin moves on cardboard” anymore and he could make a hot song just saying “yah.” Ok, now, where do I start? First, this dude essentially said a rapper doesn’t actually need to be good at rapping anymore. Then, he randomly criticized breakdancing. Shit, that’s already two of the four original elements of Hip Hop, man! I’m surprised he didn’t turn around and tell his DJ he wasn’t shit.

Look, like I said regarding Uzi, there’s nothing wrong with progression. The issue here is these younger dudes literally have no respect for anyone who paved the way for them. Do they think they invented 808‘s or getting turnt? Hell, Juicy J had me wanting to fight people in the club since the ’90s, son. Show some fucking reverence for the people who laid the foundation. Because news flash to these newer artists: there’s literally NOTHING happening out here that doesn’t have an origin in something that preceded it.

In the end, I’ll keep playing my Trap music at ignorant levels in the car. Well, not Uzi or Yachty because I truthfully thought their music sucked even before they made their dumbass comments. Tell them to come talk to me when they’ve had a career even remotely as long as the artists they’re dissing. Good day.
