My Bittersweet Thoughts About Jordan Peele’s Win

*Sigh* I guess I’m going to be that guy, son. Now, before I get skewered by the Black community, let me be clear: I’m not about to slander Get Out. Look, at this point, nothing else needs to be said about how great that movie was/is. I mean, the film gave us the concept of the “sunken place,” son. That, in and of itself, is good enough to explain the virtues of this movie. With all of that being said, I don’t know how hyped we should be about Jordan Peele‘s Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay. Let me explain why.

So, about a week ago, Vulture interviewed some of the younger Academy voters. As expected, Get Out became a topic of conversation. Now, during the course of that discussion, the younger voters admitted that the older factions of the Academy were resistant to Get Out. According to them, Peele’s film was “not an Oscar film.” This was noteworthy because a bunch of the people saying this had never seen the movie. So, simply based on its appearance, they reached the conclusion that Peele’s masterwork wasn’t good enough. Hmm, I wonder why that would be, man.

Look, if we’re keeping it a buck, we all know what the deal is, fam. The fact of the matter is, these older voters don’t see the art in Black movies. Real talk, they saw a Black director and a Black cast and said “no thank you.” All in all, that brings me to my main point: why the fuck do we care about the Oscars? Listen, for years we’ve had to beg them to acknowledge our artistry. Why? Why do we give the Academy and Hollywood so much power when they don’t respect our ideas? All in all, it’s hard for me to rejoice over Peele’s win when the Academy didn’t even want to watch his movie in the first place.

In the end, I’m not trying to shit on history, bruh. Look, it’s dope that Peele was able to do something that no other Black person has done. However; in my eyes, this is kind of a backhanded award, son. Ultimately, how can I value this achievement when the “powers that be” didn’t value the movie? By and by, we need to stop giving the establishment so much deference. At the end of the day, they don’t respect us. So, we have no need to respect them. That is all. LC out.

My Problem With Casey Affleck

So, to be honest, in regards to acting merit, I AM upset that Casey Affleck beat Denzel Washington for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. However; that’s not why I’m writing this post today. In actuality, I’m REALLY upset that Affleck won this award because of his history. Now, whether people want to admit it or not, the Academy just awarded a sexual abuser with their highest honor. Ultimately, all I want to know is, why is Affleck allowed to slide but Nate Parker was destroyed by the allegations against him?

Now, before I continue, let me make a few things clear. I don’t fuck with sexual assault, regardless of the culprit’s race. Despite the fact that Parker was found not guilty of raping a fellow college student, I still believe he did it. Why? Because I heard the recorded conversation between him and the victim. Look, I won’t go any further into this because I already wrote a dissertation on this topic. In any case, when the general public got wind of this story, it completely tanked the promotion of his The Birth of a Nation film. All in all, I can’t really say I’m bothered by this because I have a hard time supporting an alleged rapist.

Moving on, everything I just said feeds into my disdain for Affleck’s win. Look, if anyone does a little digging, they’ll find the accusations that two women made against him during the filming of I’m Still Here. First, Magdalena Gorka claimed that he got into bed with her on set and tried to pressure her into sleeping with him. Now, since he was also the director, when she refused, he made her life hell on set. Next, Amanda White claimed that Affleck instructed another crew member to show her his dick, he called women “cows” and he also told her it was time for her to get pregnant. Basically, Affleck was fucking bugging during the movie shoot.

All I want to know is, why is Affleck allowed to prosper while Parker was taken down? In my eyes, neither men should be allowed to succeed. If we don’t condone violence against women, then perpetrators should have to walk around with a scarlet letter. I hate to bring race into discussions about women’s rights, but it’s no coincidence that a White rapist can reach the pinnacle of his industry, while a Black one falls by the wayside. Only in America can the people find a way to divide the same atrocity along racial lines.

In the end, both men ain’t shit for what they’ve done to women. On the real, Affleck can take his Oscar and shove it. Also, shout-out to the Academy for essentially being sexual abuse-sympathizers. *Sigh* It’s a crazy world we live in, son. LC out.

Luke Cage Drinks White People’s Tears

White people just need to be a part of everything, huh? It’s mind-boggling how our Caucasian counterparts can watch a show about a Black man in Harlem and be upset about the lack of White representation. Now, the last time I checked, Harlem wasn’t Greenwich, Connecticut. However; I refuse to go down this path. I’m not going to spend my time debating such a stupid argument. Instead, I’m going to propose a trade. On behalf of the Black Delegation, we’ll make future episodes of Luke Cage “more White” if the following things happen:

1. Friends returns with more Black people in its cast.

2. Seinfeld returns with more Black people in its cast.

3. The Wonder Years returns with more Black people in its cast.

4. Gilligan’s Island returns with more Black people in its cast.

Ok, wait, let me stop for a second. Does everyone see where I’m going with this? Literally EVERY television show or movie features a predominantly White cast. Hell, why the fuck do dumbasses think Black people were so angry about the Academy Awards last year? Did we already forget the #OscarsSoWhite movement? All we do is beg for representation, man. Instead, we get idiots like Tim Burton explaining why diversity isn’t important in his movies. So, White people get to be the stars of damn near ALL of our entertainment and they STILL want to commandeer ours too. Man, the fuckery is so strong, I don’t even know how to put it into words.

With all of that being said, let me backtrack for a second. No, we will NOT add more White people to Luke Cage just to make the Butt Hurt Federation happy. For once, we’re telling stories about OUR lives, and news flash, White people aren’t always a part of it. On the real, if this is what people think “reverse racism” is, they literally have no clue about regular racism. Black people have to deal with institutional bias, profiling and brutality, while fools complain about not being shown at the same deli as Luke. Is this a fucking joke, son? Like, this can’t be real life.

All in all, if any White person is mad about Luke Cage, then I’m happy. On the real, anyone that falls into that category needs to grow the fuck up. Black people don’t watch shows set in Nebraska and wonder why we’re under-represented. This is Harlem, bitch! Hold this L. Good day.

P.S. Simone Missick, the woman who plays Misty Knight on the show, is fine as FUCK, son! Now, that has absolutely nothing to do with the subject of this post, but I had to say it anyway.

P.P.S. Shout-out to my dude Brent for inspiring this post. I tried to avoid the tomfoolery, but I do take good advice when it’s given to me. That is all.
