So we’re 5 episodes into the last season of Breaking Bad, and I’m overly anxious to see how the proverbial shit hits the fan. At this point, I don’t see how the Walter White story finishes with a happy ending. He’s too far gone for this saga to come to a reasonable conclusion. For me, the real question is, how many people are actually going to die because of some selfish decision he made? Since we have 11 more episodes to figure this out, let the speculation begin.
If you’re an aficionado of the series, you’ve witnessed the amoral descent of Walter H. White. The 50-year-old, cancer-stricken high school teacher is long gone and Heisenberg is all that’s left. Over the last 4 seasons, he’s manipulated every person close to him, solely to further his own ambitions. This includes, but isn’t limited to, his wife Skyler White, his brother-in-law Hank Schrader and his partner/surrogate son Jesse Pinkman. I’m not even sure if Walt feels any genuine emotion anymore. Most times, when he’s displaying a level of vulnerability, it’s for the sake of executing some well-thought-out plan. Case in point, during this past Sunday‘s “Dead Freight” episode, he feigned tears about his marriage in Hank’s office, for the sake of placing a listening device on his computer. Walt’s involvement in the drug game is no longer based on providing for his family, but instead, to further his own power and control.
If the flash-forward at the beginning of the “Live Free or Die” episode is any indication, Walt’s ambition comes back to bite him. In the clip, he’s celebrating his 52nd birthday alone at a Denny’s, while using a pseudonym. Next, he makes a transaction with a gunrunner in the bathroom, who gives him the keys to a car with an M60 machine gun in the trunk. Lord only knows what kind of trouble Walt has gotten himself into, but I’d bet money it’s because of some decision he made out of pure hubris. The question is, how many people are going to take the fall with him? Is Hank going to find out who he really is? Is Jesse going to get hurt/die because of a Heisenberg decision? Will his family remain safe? I guess only time will tell, but I’m expecting the worse. All hail the king.
