With Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao doing the corniest song and dance instead of fighting each other, I’m starting to long for the days when damn near every Pay-Per-View event was, well, an event. As a kid, I distinctly remember watching Lennox Lewis get robbed after fighting Evander Holyfield the first time. I remember the welterweight battles between Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosley. Hell, even though I was only going on 5-years-old, I remember my pops bugging when Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas. What happened to those days? I hate being that “back in my day” guy, but as a boxing fan, I no longer have anything to look forward to.
Until the current state of boxing picks up, I’ll be busy watching footage of classic boxing matches and the UFC. At this point, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre are single-handedly keeping the fight fan in me alive. If you want a trip down memory lane, take a look at some classic fights below. This is what boxing is supposed to be. Wake me up when it gets interesting again. Good day.
